Set in Ottawa, at the fictional National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), Season 2 of Insecurity follows secret agent Alex Cranston and her team of spies as they juggle dates, terrorists, pets, ex-boyfriends and the safety of the nation. Natalie Lisinska plays Alex Cranston, the intelligent yet quirky, NISA Team Leader. Today, I had the opportunity to have a phone interview with her to talk about tonight’s Season Premiere.

So how’s the weather in Vancouver today?
Natalie: It’s wet.

I thought I’d start off this interviewing by learning a little more about you. What was the role that gave you the “Ah-Ha” moment to pursue a career in acting?

Natalie:   I was in grade 11 Drama and my drama teacher was auditioning for Arthur Miller’s Playing for Time. He made it known that he wasn’t going to select someone who wasn’t pursuing acting as a career. He pulled me aside and asked me if I was going to audition and I was certain I wanted to the part.  Sincerely, I have not looked back.

I read that you are musically inclined as well….

Natalie (interrupts): You did?  Where?

It was on your Resume

Natalie: Yes, I played the flute since Grade 5 and I’m learning the guitar.

If you could give one piece of advice to young girls aspiring to be an actress what would it be?

Natalie: Stay true to yourself and your own personalities that makes you, YOU.  You are the most useful tool that you have.  Being you is the only thing that no one can beat you at.

Being a woman in this industry is a dance.  I went blond on a total whim year’s ago and casting directors really liked me.  I went back to my natural hair colour and I didn’t work for a period of time.  Another casting director suggested I go blond and I’ve been that way ever since.

This afternoon we tweeted about shoes.  Are you the type of women who has a different pair of shoes for every outfit?

Natalie: I kind of am.  I was never that way, but there’s nothing like a good pair of shoes.

I often get my information through Social Media venues, I see that you got back to Toronto just in time for the Toronto Film Festival.  I attend the Film Festival yearly so I’m curious if you seen any films?

Natalie:  Yes, I did.  I saw I’m Yours with Rusty Sutherland.  It’s funny that I ended up seeing this film, as I just got back from driving from Regina to Toronto.  The characters in the movie were driving the same highway that I had just been driving only days before.

Did you attend any parties at TIFF?

Natalie: I went to the CFC Annual BBQ which is very relaxed and casual.  I was also very proud to be invited to the Women in Film and Television Event. Oh yes, I also attended the Playback Magazine Canadian Film and Television Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

I watched the first episode of Insecurity and I really enjoyed it.  It reminded me of the 60′s series Get Smart.  I was kind of expecting someone to pull out a stiletto and start talking into it.  What attracted you to the role of Alex Cranston?

Natalie:  She is just so plucky and fearless. So incorrigible.  You can knock her down and she keeps getting up.  The coolest thing about her is that she isn’t defined by a man in the show.  I love that she’s strong and feminine while being a little goofy at the same time.

I absolutely love the chemistry between Alex and her boss, Peter (played by William deVry).  Do you foresee any comedic romance in the future?  Can you even tell me?

Natalie: I see a Sam and Diane, from Cheers, kind of relationship.  I think there is definitely chemistry between Alex and Peter, but Alex puts her career first.  I believe that the central conflict for her is that the man that she ultimately finds herself attracted to will jeopardize the thing most important in her life, which is her career.

Did you enjoy your time spent in Regina while filming the show?

Natalie: Regina was fantastic! With all of us out there to shoot felt like summer camp.  We played a mass of board games with some of the writers.  I couldn’t have asked for a better crew.

I seen on Facebook that you attended a Festival while you were there?

Natalie: Yes! I attended the Regina Folk Festival which was amazing.  KD Lang was unbelievable.  I also seen Fred Penner, who was the MC.  It was so cool to see him as he was the first person I went to see as a child.   I was star struck!

I consider myself a Social Media Influencer, so if I was to tweet to something about the Season Premiere tonight on your behalf, what would you want me to say?

Natalie: “Get together with your favorite people, who you like to laugh with, to watch Insecurity”   Tonight, I will be pouring a glass of champagne and watching the show with my good friend.

Thanks Natalie for providing me the opportunity to speak with you!
