Rupert Everett: ‘Can’t think of anything worse’ than gay parents’

Rupert Everett caused quite a stir when he expressed his thoughts about gay parenting to the UK’s Sunday Times Magazine.   Reading this article made me literally sick in realizing that he may be right in a round about way.

Everett told the Times about a time when his mother met his boyfriend. Everett said she “still wishes I had a wife and kids,” and “she thinks children need a father and a mother and I agree with her. I can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads.”

I want it to be known that I do not hold prejudice against anyone for their sexual orientation, race, or financial status.

A Simple Joke that Stimulated Some Heavy Thinking

My whole thought process is due to my daughter trying to pull a fast one on me about three months ago and it really got me thinking.  So much so that I reached out to my gay friends for their thoughts.

Would I want to see my daughter go through the struggles of being gay?  No

Would it matter to me? It would hurt every inch of my being to see the struggles she’d have to face by some of the general population.

Would I still love and support her?  Absolutely.  I could never abandon her for her preferences.

While sitting with a gay friend the other day, we talked about our growing children.  I looked at him and finally came out with the question that I’ve been dying to ask for ages, “Would it upset you if your son turned out to be gay?”

His answer was a resounding, “Yes. Even in today’s society, there is always someone who will snicker, bully, or categorize a person because of  their sexual orientation.  It has gotten progressively better, but the stigma is still there.”

This gentleman, that I speak of, assisted in co-raising two of the most wonderful boys that I know.  I love them to bits and I think that they did a wonderful job.  I was in awe that they acknowledged the struggle that these boys had being raised by two dads on the weekends.

Do I think gay parenting is OK?  Yes, they are human beings with compassion.

They have every right to parent as it part of the circle of life for everyone.

Gay parents can raise children to be worldly and accepting of others which is a very hard task for many people in general society.  However, it’s the children who must face the wrath of unkind souls with bitter upbringings or a bone to pick.

I wish we lived in a world where everyone was compassionate enough to realize that it takes many different types of individuals to make this world a better place.

  • Turn the other cheek when we have something to say about a couple’s parenting skills.
  • Lend a hand when someone is grieving.
  • Share a thought when something like this is brought to the media.

I do understand Rupert Everett’s point, however, I have to disagree.  I’ve seen some wonderful kids brought up in this world who have gay parents.  The problem still lies in the stigma and getting those kids from child to adult with minimal scars.  Our children shouldn’t have to be bullied based on our life’s path whether we are gay, poor, or a little on the weird side.

We are all human beings trying to make the best of the hand dealt to us.
