This coming Family Day Weekend (February 13-15 2015) the TIFF Light Box will be hosting the Third annual Next Wave Festival.
The Next Wave is targeted towards teenagers who enjoys watching films. TIFF Next Wave is debuting 11 movies that caters to teenagers and coming of age.
Not only is Next Wave debuting movies this coming Family Day Weekend, they will also have a marathon screening of classic favourites that revolves around outcast and misfits such as: Dazed and Confused, Heather, Submarine, Napoleon Dynamite and Moonrise Kingdom. The movies that will be debuting (aside from the premium selection) will be free for high school students (With Student ID). That’s not it, young movie goers can enjoy the screenings and observe many other exciting events that will take place during the festival, such as:
Battle Of The Scores: Battle of the scores will take place on Friday, February 13th at 7 pm. Battle of the scores showcases Toronto’s young musical talent. Next Wave picked six bands who are high-school-aged and gave them 3 weeks to compose an original “score” that goes along with a short film. These contenders will debut their soundtrack on stage. At the end of the showcase, the winners are determined by the audience and a panel of judges who are part of Toronto’s music and film community.
Talent Lab: The Talent Lab will be held on Saturday, February 14th and is open to teenagers 14-18, who are interested in the film industry. Teens will be mentored by accomplished film artist and industry professionals in this focused, interactive workshop. The workshop will take place from 10am-2pm. This workshop will be packed full of information for those who are interested in learning about the industry. This workshop includes screenings, Q&As, networking opportunities and a fast-paced talent incubator.
24 Hour Film Challenge: Young film makers had 24 hours to create a short film with little to no preparation prior to the date of filming. The final presentation of the films that were submitted and met with the criteria will be held at the end of the festival which is on Sunday, February 15th.
